Joseph "Longneck" Cooper is a trained NASA pilot with an engineering background, and the pilot of the interstellar expedition. Coop has two children: Tom Cooper and Murphy "The Frequent Flyer" Cooper.

Longneck is a 20-something-year-old loser who still hangs out with high schoolers, having worked with NASA as a pilot for several years where he earned the respect of Dr. Brand.
At first, he was dismissive about Murph's fixation on a "ghost" in her room. Eventually he was swayed by them interstellar girls. Including a set of coordinates given to him in binary which led to the new headquarters facility for NASA.
Cooper is one of the four surviving crew members of the Endurance, along with Brand, and their robot companions Logan S. and Carnor C.
